Welcome To Classic Mask

Welcome to the &;New Classic Mask; site dedicated to the preservation of the most unique piece of sports equipment.

My semi - retirement swan "song"

Welcome to Classic MaskA few years ago I started ;Classic Mask; as a small on line business venture and was amazed at how much interest there is in vintage style goalie masks. Now in 2003, I no longer have the time to dedicate to making these masks, my young family and my career are demanding more of my time and I simply am no longer able to produce custom fit masks to same scale as in the past. Frankly, I want to pursue my other interests. Also, I never really intended on Classic Mask1; growing as it did, and at this point I either have to expand and make it a full time gig or scale it down; Im choosing to scale it down. If this were to become an occupation Im sure I wouldnt enjoy it as much.

Welcome to Classic MaskThe past three years have been a blast; Ive met some truly great people who have made the effort to find me here in Grand Falls N.B. Canada. People who have traveled from the states, Quebec, Ontario and even France just to meet me, to chat about masks and see my studio. Ive had the opportunity to make a mask for a Steven Segal movie Exit Wounds. The Canadian National Museum of Science and Technology featured an exhibition of my work; the Bruins alumni used one of my masks in a charity game.

I have always dreamed of having an extensive collection of masks and now Ill make a few masks a year for other people but mostly I want to work on my own personal collection. I still wear the old style masks when I play and still love the look and feel of them. I have two work studios here at my house; one for mould making and painting and one for the messy work the fiberglass lay up and sanding. I;m running out of space to keep everyones moulds (one corner of my studio looks like the aftermath of the French Revolution).

I would like to thank everyone out there for all the kind words in my guest book about my work.

I still have a great passion for vintage goalie masks and this new site will reflect this passion. I have spent a great deal of time researching goalie masks over the years and now I would like to share some of the “stuff” I have gathered; information, pictures etc. This new site is dedicated to all the mask makers and artists. To everyone who helped save goalies’ faces and especially dedicated to the memory of Jim Murphy, Roy Weatherbee, Jacques Plante, Bill Burchmore, Ernie Higgins and all the early mask pioneers. Also to my good friend Jim Homuth whose wisdom and friendly nature always astonishes and inspires me.

To all the modern guys; Greg Harrison, Lefty Wilson, Michel Lefebvre, Jerry Wright, Gary Warwick, Gerry Van Veldon, Matt Garland, Tony Pirilio, Gerry Schultz, Dave Dryden, Seth Martin, Dominic Malerba, John Pothitoes, Eddie Shultz, David Britt, Bob Dillon, Don Straus, Tony Deluca and any other mask makers who helped save goalies’ faces and who gave the sport hockey a great look. Sorry if I left anyone out, don’t take it personally just e mail me a line and I’ll get your name up.

Welcome to Classic MaskSo, welcome to my online “shrine” dedicated to the preservation of vintage goalie masks. It is in no way complete and there are probably a lot of errors and missing info. I am a history buff and feel that this will be a little piece of hockey history. So enjoy!

If you have any questions or you have any information to add please feel free to contact me. Or if you would like to order a custom made mask you can e mail me at; gandl @nb.sympatico.ca or call me (506) 473-5444

I will continue to make custom goalie masks and will accept orders on a first come basis. So if you’re willing to wait you can order one of these great pieces of hockey history. I am especially interested in trading for old masks or memorabilia. So if you have an old interesting mask (or anything else) that you’re willing to part with in exchange for any style new custom fit mask fell free to contact me (Past customers will be given preference).
My wish list: if you have any thing you would be willing to exchange for a custom made mask (any style) contact me. In the past I’ve exchanged masks for goalie gear, a Higgins mask, an original art work by Nelson White, a collage of vintage masks. So here’s my wish list;

1) A Lefty Wilson mask original works of art;
2) Photos of NHL goalies / mask videos of games from the 70’s
3) Another Higgins mask any other “cool” stuff
4) A Harrison mask Vintage 70’s goal equipment
5) A Weatherbee mask
6) A Homuth mask
7) Authentic goalie’s sweaters
8) Anything from WWI; (maybe WWII memorabilia if it’s really interesting
